Wine Wednesday

Heitz Cellars

A couple years ago we purchased a case of Heitz 2009 Sauvignon Blanc. With a soft smooth start, tropical fruit and citrus notes in the middle, and a bright acidity on the finish, it was wonderful to have on hand for pop-in guests, or for a glass with dinner in the middle or the week. A month ago we finally visited the winery for a tasting.

Located on Highway 29, Heitz’ tasting room, is right in the middle of all the action. The building is smaller than many wineries, but with super high ceilings and a nice, cozy atmosphere. Heitz is one of the few wineries left that does not charge for a tasting. We tried a number of wines, including the current release of Sauvignon Blanc 2011, 2006 Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Ink Grade Port.

I must say, their 2011 Sauvignon Blanc is my favorite among the wines we tasted. The Ink Grade Port is quite good too – rich, sweet, round, and a bit syrupy like a thin honey, with bold berry flavors.

Wednesday Wine Review

Castello di Amorosa

Last weekend friends drove up from San Francisco to visit us in Napa and we all headed north to Castello di Amorosa in Calistoga.  If you are able to drive North on Silverado Trail all the way to Calistoga, you can see The Castle to the west, across the valley.  It’s quite a sight to see a medieval Italian castle in the middle of Napa Valley.  Once you drive through the pillars marking the entrance, you do kind of get the feeling that you are entering Italy.  A giant stone castle looms before you, complete with turrets.

Ad Hoc

A couple months ago we had dinner at Ad Hoc.  I had been trying to go since January, however they were closed for renovations until March.  Then it took a while to actually get a reservation.  This restaurant books up fast, so a reservation is highly recommended.

Grilled Wild Salmon with Sweet Corn and Chanterelle Mushroom Risotto

If you’re going to visit the Napa Valley, make reservations for Mustards Grill.  Everything we ordered was delicious.  Everything on the menu looked delicious and the wine list is huge.  I find it fun to try a local wine, so if you really like it you can possibly head to the winery afterwards.  Reservations are a must, unless you don’t mind waiting for about an hour.  We went on a Sunday afternoon at 2pm and the place was packed.

Napa Valley Wine Train

Last month my husband and I enjoyed our Christmas gift from last Christmas — tickets for dinner service in the Vista Dome Car on the Napa Valley Wine Train.  It’s a fun night out offering a unique atmosphere, and allowing you to see the Valley and vineyards from a different view.
