Thumbprint cookies were always a Christmas cookie must in our house when I was growing up. The lemon zest is a nice flavor spark and pairs best with berry jams. I like filling the cookies with jam before baking to get a bit of gooey, chewy goodness.

Chocolate truffles are an easy holiday candy to make, and they last a while, so you can make them ahead. You can use any type of flavoring in the chocolate. Vanilla is used here, but peppermint or hazelnut would also work well. You can also infuse the cream with flavors such as Earl Grey tea, lavender, or rose. Just steep the hot cream with your flavor, and then strain it before pouring it over the chocolate.

Adapted from Cook’s Illustrated

Soft, chewy gingerbread cookies are one of my favorite holiday cookies.  The warm spices and molasses pair extremely well with coffee, milk, and hot cocoa.  Gingerbread cookies also have a wonderful holiday smell with the ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.  Be careful not to over bake this cookie; you want it nice and soft.  Store cookies in airtight containers at room temperature.  Place sheets of parchment in between the cookies to prevent the icing from sticking to the other cookies.
