This French toast like casserole is great for brunch, especially with guests around. You can make it in advance (for the most part), and doesn’t require any attention while baking, allowing you to visit with guest, or work on other dishes for the brunch. Best of all, it makes a lot, and works as leftovers too!

Here’s a midwest summer classic . . . Cherry Pie. Nothing says summer like ripe sweet cherries. Just in time for Independence Day, this pie will delight eaters of all ages. Enlist a family member to help with the pitting, which is the most time consuming part of making this dessert. For enhanced presentation make a lattice crust topping and use a fluted ravioli cutter to add a touch of flare. Almond and cherries go together beautifully, so substitute some of the flour in the dough with almond meal and add a bit of almond extract to the pie filling. You taste buds will be amazed.

Casserole-roasted Chicken with Bacon, Onions and Potatoes
Today is Julia Child’s birthday. So, in celebration of Julia’s birthday my friend and I cooked a complete dinner from Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Each of us received a copy of the cookbook for Christmas last year, but neither of us had cooked from it yet, and it was definitely time to do so. We chose three recipes, an entrée, a vegetable, and a dessert and prepared them exactly as Julia instructed. The meal was fantastic and I have a feeling I will be getting requests for this dinner again very soon, as well as encouragement to continue trying recipes from Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
