Domaine Carneros

The other weekend we had the wonderful opportunity of taking a tour and tasting at Domaine Carneros.  This gorgeous French style chateau, completed in 1989, is just off Highway 12/121, with amazing rolling hill vineyard views.  Our particular March visit was raining, but just as beautiful, with verdant green grasses among the dormant vines.

Whetstone Wine Cellars

Since we moved up to Napa at the end of 2011, I’ve been watching Whetstone Wine Cellars and waiting for their tasting salon to open.  The building is a majestic, old stone chateau designed by the legendary Hamden M. McIntyre (who also designed Trefethen and Greystone, among other legendary wineries).

Wine Wednesday

Heitz Cellars

A couple years ago we purchased a case of Heitz 2009 Sauvignon Blanc. With a soft smooth start, tropical fruit and citrus notes in the middle, and a bright acidity on the finish, it was wonderful to have on hand for pop-in guests, or for a glass with dinner in the middle or the week. A month ago we finally visited the winery for a tasting.

Located on Highway 29, Heitz’ tasting room, is right in the middle of all the action. The building is smaller than many wineries, but with super high ceilings and a nice, cozy atmosphere. Heitz is one of the few wineries left that does not charge for a tasting. We tried a number of wines, including the current release of Sauvignon Blanc 2011, 2006 Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Ink Grade Port.

I must say, their 2011 Sauvignon Blanc is my favorite among the wines we tasted. The Ink Grade Port is quite good too – rich, sweet, round, and a bit syrupy like a thin honey, with bold berry flavors.
