Modern Art Desserts

I received the Modern Art Desserts cookbook as a Christmas gift, and have already made two of the recipes.  Written by Caitlin Freeman, pastry chef of the popular Blue Bottle Coffee, and previous partner of Miette.  Caitlin started creating desserts based on works of Modern Art when Blue Bottle Coffee was asked to open a café at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

The Blue Bottle Craft of Coffee

I quite enjoyed The Blue Bottle Craft of Coffee book.  I must admit one of my main reasons for checking out this book was for the Liege Waffle recipe, which is the waffle served at the San Francisco Ferry Building.  Although, I also happen to love Blue Bottle Coffee, so I figured the book would also impart some excellent coffee information.

The book gives a bit of history and background on the start of Blue Bottle Coffee, from a one-person kiosk at the farmers’ market, to the now present-day café and roasting locations.  Explanation on how beans are obtained and how roasts are developed give a bit more in depth information.  Overviews of various ways to brew coffee provide a great little tutorial, as well as various types of equipment, and a recipe to roast your own beans at home (which I have yet to actually try).

One of the most fascinating parts of the book for me was the coffee culture in Japan, with cafes hidden down alleys serving nel drip coffee and exquisite desserts.  It definitely made me want to book a trip to Japan to try the coffee.

The book concludes with two chapters on recipes — one chapter on breakfast and dessert recipes, and another chapter with recipes from chefs of favorite restaurants.

This is a great book to get in depth information on all things coffee, from bean growing and processing, to roasting, to various extraction methods, to food pairings.

The Feast Nearby

By Robin Mather

I found The Feast Nearby; a charmingly real, slice-of-life memoir in my library’s digital downloads section.  Being from Michigan, and with a great interest in food and cooking, I instantly clicked on the borrow button.

Mariel’s Kitchen

A few years ago a friend gave me this cookbook. I think I read through it in a weekend, but then set it aside and never really cooked from it. This year I picked it back up, and have cooked a number of recipes from the book.

Lemon Loaf Cake

Overall, the results of this Lemon Loaf Cake were pretty much like I expected from reading the description.  I made sure to seek out cake flour, since it’s a pound-like cake with a dense crumb.  (more…)
