New Orleans Style Iced Coffee
I found this recipe on the back of a postcard at Blue Bottle Coffee in the San Francisco Ferry Building. It’s a refreshing, slightly sweet, slightly creamy iced coffee. The chicory really adds a nice depth of flavor.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Inactive Prep Time: 10-12 hours
Serves: 12
Ingredients
1 lb coffee beans
1.5 oz chicory
2 quarts water
Milk
Simple Syrup
Equipment
A large non-reactive pot, a pitcher, fine mesh sieve
Procedure
The Cold Brewed Coffee
Grind the coffee and the chicory to a medium grind.
Pour the coffee in a large pot and cover it with 2 quarts of cold water. Place a lid on the pot and let it sit overnight or for up to 12 hours.
Strain the coffee-chicory concentrate through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl, and then pour the concentrate into the pitcher.
The concentrate will keep for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.
The New Orleans Style Iced Coffee
Fill a tall glass with ice. Fill the glass ¼ full with coffee concentrate, then fill the remaining space with milk. Add about 2 teaspoons of simple syrup (or to taste).
