Here’s a nice and refreshing spring or summer cocktail.  The Gimlet is updated to include the scent and taste of fresh basil. This beverage is great on a warm afternoon or evening.  If you would like the drink virgin, replace the gin with sparkling water for a bubbly, limeade beverage.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Serves: 2 servings

4 ounces gin (or vodka)

Zest of 1 lime, plus 2 twists for garnish (optional)

2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice, from about 1 lime

2 ounces simple syrup

A handful of fresh basil leaves, at least 6 large leaves

Fresh tarragon or basil for garnish

Cocktail Shaker, Muddler (or wooden spoon)

Place the 2 ounces of simple syrup and the basil leaves in a cocktail shaker.

Muddle the basil leaves with the simple syrup.

Add in ice to almost fill the shaker.

Pour in 4 ounces gin, the zest of 1 lime, and 2 ounces of freshly squeezed lime juice.

Put the lid on the shaker and shake until cold.

Strain the mixture into 2 martini glasses or tumblers and garnish with a twist of lime and a basil leaf or tarragon sprig.
