This weeks Tuesday Tip is a fun activity to do with kids and a great money saver!
I saw this method for homemade microwave popcorn on a couple of websites within a week of each other. Then after a Google search found out that the word on homemade microwave popcorn has been out for a while. I don’t know why I never thought of this before. It’s a great money saver, since store bought microwave popcorn costs quite a bit more than just buying popcorn kernels. So skip the preservative laden prepackaged microwave popcorn, and pop your own bag. Which also allows you to control the amount of real butter or real oil you use.
Active Prep and Cook Time: 5 minutes
¼ cup of popcorn kernels
2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil, or melted butter, or olive oil flavored cooking spray
½ Fine sea salt or kosher salt
Brown Paper Lunch Bag
Place ¼ cup of popcorn kernels in a brown paper bag and tightly fold the top of the bag over a few times. Make sure to leave plenty of empty bag space to allow room for the kernels to expand. If you wish you can tape the bag shut, but don’t use staples because they are metal.
Place the bag in the microwave for 2-3 minutes on high, or until the popping reduces to only one pop every few seconds.
Remove the bag and open it carefully, watching out for steam.
Drizzle 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil over the popcorn in the bag and sprinkle with salt. Shake the bag to cover the popcorn in oil and salt. Repeat with the second teaspoon of olive oil. Or use olive oil flavored cooking spray. Pour into a bowl and munch away.
Other options for seasoning:
Finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
Chile powder, lime zest, and a slight squeeze of lime
Dried Onion Powder
Dried Garlic Powder
