Grilled Broccoli Rabe

Here’s another quick and easy way to cook broccoli.  Grill it!  Try the long, slender broccoli rabe for a more elegant look.  Great as a side dish for steak, chicken, or roasted portabella mushrooms.

Prep Time: 5-10 minutes

Cook Time: 15-20 minutes

Serves: 4 as a side

Ingredients

1 bunch of broccoli rabe

1 tablespoon olive oil

Sea salt or kosher salt, to taste

A bowl of ice water

Salted boiling water

Equipment

Grill (or Grill Pan for the stove), Tongs, Tin foil

Process

Wash and pat the broccoli rabe.

Bring a pot of salted water to a boil.  Drop in the broccoli rabe and cook for 2-3 minutes.  Then remove the broccoli and place in a bowl of salted iced water to shock the vegetable.  Drain and pat dry the broccoli rabe.  This process helps start the cooking process, but shocking the vegetables in the cold water helps retain the vibrant green color.

Sprinkle it with 1 tablespoon of olive oil.

Sprinkle sea salt to taste.

Mix to coat thoroughly.

Over medium heat, place the broccoli directly on the grill if you have grates close together; otherwise place it on tin foil or in a grill basket.  Placing the broccoli on tin foil won’t give you the grill marks or the full grilled flavor, but it’s still tasty.  Watch closely and grill for 10-15 minutes total, flipping it over after the first 5-7 minutes.

    I found your article on Grilled Broccoli Rabe very helpful and interesting. I’ve seen it
    in the vegetable market but never tried it although I like regular broccoli. I’ll be trying it soon although I don’t have a barbecue. Thank you
